Confused or intimidated by your camera’s dials and settings? You weren’t alone — and that’s exactly why the Oakville Camera Club hosted its “Introduction to Photography” workshop on November 2.
Designed especially for beginners, this relaxed, hands-on session guided participants through the essential building blocks of photography — no prior knowledge required.
Over three engaging hours, 23 new and aspiring photographers explored key topics including:
The exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO)
Metering modes and focus modes
RAW vs. JPEG formats
Focus area options (point, area, zone, tracking — all brand-neutral!)
Aperture, shutter, and manual modes
Exposure compensation and auto ISO
Plus a lively discussion on photo organization and editing workflows
Concepts that once seemed confusing were explained in clear, easy-to-understand terms — helping participants finally make sense of what those camera dials really do.
The feedback was unanimous: attendees left feeling more confident, inspired, and eager to get out shooting. As one participant summed it up, “Everything finally clicked!”

Workshops like this are part of the Club’s ongoing mission to make photography accessible, enjoyable, and creatively rewarding for everyone.
