Exploring the Essence of Style
On December 6, OCC members gathered for a mentorship session that encouraged everyone to look inward, outward, and somewhere in between: a guided exploration of a photographer’s style. As any photographer knows, style isn’t something you wake up with — it’s something you earn slowly through curiosity, trial and error, influence, and eventually confidence. It evolves as we evolve.
The morning opened with a conversation about what “style” actually means. It encompasses the choices we make instinctively, the subjects we return to, and the way we interpret light, gesture, color, abstraction, or emotion. Participants reflected on whether they felt their own style had begun to emerge — and if so, how they might describe it. Some pointed to recurring themes or compositional habits, while others admitted they weren’t sure yet but were actively working toward it.
The Influence of Others
From there, the group shifted to an exercise in influence. Each participant selected an influential photographer or artist whose work resonated with them. They studied that artist's visual language and then created images of their own to emulate that style. It wasn’t about imitation; it was about understanding. What choices did their chosen artist make? Why did those choices work? And what could be carried into their own evolving practice?
What emerged was a wide range of thoughtful interpretations: bold graphic contrasts, painterly softness, minimalist geometry, expressive portraiture, street-inspired storytelling, and more. The process sparked lively discussion and, more importantly, a deeper sense of how influence becomes inspiration, and how inspiration becomes personal expression.
The Role of Mentorship
This mentoring event was organized and led by OCC Mentor Jared Fein, whose guidance shaped the structure and reflective tone of the discussion. His experience and insight provided a valuable framework for participants to explore their creative paths. A full summary of the presentation, along with selected images from the group’s work, can be found here.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
Finding and refining one’s photographic voice is an ongoing journey. Each step taken during this mentorship session contributed to a greater understanding of personal style. It’s essential to remember that this journey is unique for everyone. Embrace the process, and allow your style to unfold organically.
Tips for Developing Your Style
Experiment: Try different techniques and subjects. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Study Influences: Look at the work of photographers you admire. Analyze what draws you to their style.
Reflect: Take time to think about your own work. What themes or subjects do you gravitate toward?
Seek Feedback: Share your work with others. Constructive criticism can help you grow.
Practice: The more you shoot, the more your style will develop. Consistency is key.
The Importance of Community
Being part of a community can significantly enhance your growth as a photographer. Sharing experiences, learning from others, and receiving support can inspire you to push your boundaries. Engaging in discussions, attending workshops, and participating in critiques can provide new perspectives that enrich your practice.
Conclusion
A thoughtful event, a generous mentor, and another step forward in the ongoing journey of finding — and refining — one’s photographic voice. Embrace the exploration of your style. Remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey you take to get there. Enjoy every moment of it!
