What happens when lenses align, birds take flight, and a circle of passionate photography enthusiasts come together to learn, teach, and inspire? You get more than just an afternoon gathering—you get a spark that ignites creativity and community.
This past afternoon was nothing short of transformative. Hosted with warmth and generosity by Marion and Peter West, our bird photography mentorship session reminded us what’s possible when shared passion meets open-hearted hospitality.
A Backyard Teeming with Life
Marion and Peter’s beautiful backyard—lush with foliage and alive with birdsong—became our living classroom. Feeders overflowed with seeds, attracting a delightful array of feathered visitors. We captured the fast-moving charm of chipping sparrows and house finches at the feeders, admired the quiet elegance of a mourning dove resting among the leaves, and followed the flash of a female cardinal navigating the grapevines.
Every corner offered something new—an opportunity to practice, learn, and marvel.
A Living Mentorship
There was no hierarchy here—just mutual respect and a willingness to share. As long lenses swung into action and shutter speeds were debated, experienced members gently coached newcomers, while emerging photographers brought fresh eyes and bold perspectives.
Under the guidance of supportive mentors, and amid casual yet powerful peer learning, we each found our own rhythm. It wasn’t about technical perfection. It was about discovery—of our tools, our subjects, and ourselves.
The Soul of the Day: People and Purpose
The magic didn’t end with the birds. Between photo bursts, we gathered, shared stories, and formed deeper connections with one another. The atmosphere was one of encouragement and joy, reminding us that photography is not only about what we capture, but who we become in the process.
We’re thrilled to spotlight Wayne Schnurr, one of our attendees whose quiet leadership and photographic wisdom elevated the entire experience. A separate blog post will soon follow to showcase his insights and beautiful work. [LINK]
With Gratitude: Peter and Marion West
Peter and Marion, we are eternally grateful for hosting this incredible mentorship session. You didn’t just open your home—you elevated our spirits and sparked our potential. The space you created was safe, generous, and profoundly empowering. Connecting with one another in such a natural, creative setting helped unlock something special in all of us.
And let’s not forget: those burgers were legendary. Thank you for grilling up joy and for all the amazing food contributions from participants. That meal was more than sustenance—it was celebration.
Soaring to New Heights
We left with memory cards full, eyes sharper, and hearts a little lighter. Mentorship doesn’t always come from the front of a room—it emerges in moments of shared effort, whispered tips, and supportive glances. This outing reminded us of that truth.
Thank you to every attendee. You brought your curiosity, kindness, and your best selves.
Let’s keep growing. Keep learning. And keep our lenses pointed toward wonder.
