About the event
Located just north of Oakville, Crawford Lake is one of Canada’s most remarkable and internationally significant lakes. With a depth of approximately 75 feet and a relatively small surface area, the lake has a unique characteristic known as meromixis, meaning its upper and lower water layers do not mix. This rare feature preserves undisturbed layers of sediment, allowing scientists to study environmental changes over time and identify evidence of human activity. Research has revealed traces of plutonium from nuclear weapons testing, fly ash from fossil fuel combustion, and microplastics, providing a fascinating record of humanity’s impact on the environment.
In the 1970s, scientists discovered corn pollen in the lake’s deep sediments, leading to the identification of a 600-year-old Iroquoian Wendat village site. The park brings this history to life through reconstructed traditional longhouses built on their original footprints, offering visitors a glimpse into Indigenous history, culture, and agricultural practices.
